140s Cotton Underwear
Explained

The ultra-fine yarn behind SALIGIA's new Greek Olive underwear — what the number actually means, how to care for it, and the company it keeps.

"140s" gets used as a marketing number a lot — on shirt labels, on bedsheets, and now on underwear — but most people asking "what is 140s cotton underwear" have never actually been told what it measures, or why it costs more than the cotton in a plain T-shirt. Here's the honest answer, and what it means for SALIGIA's new Greek Olive range.

We've sold men's underwear since 2006 and are the exclusive UK stockist for SALIGIA, backed by over 4,830 verified Trustpilot reviews. Here's everything worth knowing before you buy.

What Does 140s Mean?

Yarn count measures how fine a spun thread is — specifically, how many 840-yard hanks of yarn can be spun from one pound of raw cotton. Spin thicker, and you get fewer, shorter hanks per pound: a low count, like the 30s–60s yarn in an everyday T-shirt. Spin finer, and you get more, longer hanks from the same pound of fibre: a high count. 140s means 140 hanks — nearly 118,000 yards — drawn from a single pound of cotton. The higher the number, the thinner the thread, and the smoother, lighter and softer the finished fabric feels against skin.

Why it costs more
Why 140s Cotton Is Rare

Not every cotton fibre can be spun this fine. Only long-staple cotton — fibres that are unusually long relative to their width — can be drawn out to 140s without snapping mid-spin, and growing, harvesting and milling cotton to that standard takes far more care than commodity cotton does. For scale: most everyday T-shirts are woven from 30s–60s yarn, good shirting starts around 80s–100s, and once you're past 120s you're in territory usually reserved for heritage names built entirely around sourcing rare, long-staple cotton — Sunspel and Zimmerli's Sea Island ranges, Derek Rose's Pima. 140s sits close to the top of that scale: fine enough to feel closer to silk than cotton against the skin, and about as fine as a workable yarn gets before the fabric turns too delicate for daily wear.

How SALIGIA Uses It
SALIGIA Green Greek Cotton Olive Sport Brief

SALIGIA blends its 140s cotton with 16.1% spandex — 83.9% cotton in total — so the fine yarn gets four-way stretch and shape recovery it wouldn't have on its own. The Greek Olive range is built around it: a mid-rise, close-fit sport brief and a trunk, both with a dual-layer pouch for support and breathability, finished with a 35mm elastic waistband woven with an olive-textured pattern and embroidered logo. The design nods to the ancient Greek olive tree — a plant built for endurance — and the fine, resilient yarn underneath it is very much in keeping with that idea.

What Makes 140s Cotton Different

01
Yarn fineness

"140s" measures how fine the spun cotton thread is — the higher the count, the smoother and softer the finished cloth.

02
Long-staple source

Only cotton with unusually long fibres can be drawn out this fine without snapping mid-spin.

03
Pill resistance

Fewer loose fibre ends on the yarn's surface means less bobbling, even after repeated wear and washing.

04
Four-way stretch

Blended with 16.1% spandex so the fine cotton keeps its shape and moves with you.

05
Breathable & lightweight

Thin, tightly spun yarn breathes better and sits lighter against skin than standard cotton.

Fit & Sizing: The Greek Olive Range

Greek Olive is a mid-rise, close fit — true to size for most, so follow the chart below. If you prefer a little more room, size up.

Size Waist (inches) Waist (cm)
Small 28–30" 72–77cm
Medium 30–32" 77–82cm
Large 33–35" 83–88cm
XL 35–37" 88–93cm

XXL is available in select Greek Olive colourways. For the full breakdown across every SALIGIA style, see our men's underwear size guide.

Is a Higher Yarn Count Always Better?

Not indefinitely. Past roughly 140s–150s, cotton yarn becomes so fine it turns fragile — lovely to look at, but too delicate for a garment that needs to survive daily wear and regular washing. 140s sits close to the practical ceiling: as fine and soft as cotton reasonably gets while still holding up as everyday underwear. That's why you'll find it on the labels of heritage names rather than fast-fashion basics — it's expensive to make, and pointless to make much finer.

How to Buy Genuine SALIGIA

Frequently Asked Questions About 140s Cotton

"140s" is a yarn count — a measure of how fine spun cotton thread is, based on how many 840-yard hanks of yarn can be spun from one pound of raw cotton. The higher the number, the finer and smoother the yarn, and the softer the finished fabric. 140s sits among the finest counts cotton is commonly spun to. SALIGIA's Greek Olive range blends 83.9% cotton spun to 140s with 16.1% spandex for stretch and recovery.
Machine wash cold, hang to dry — never soak in hot water or wash with anything abrasive, and avoid high-temperature ironing. Fine, long-staple yarn is thinner than everyday cotton, so heat and agitation wear it out faster. Wash darks and lights separately to protect colour.
Not indefinitely. Past roughly 140s–150s, cotton yarn becomes so fine it turns fragile — too delicate for a garment that needs to survive daily wear and regular washing. 140s is close to the practical ceiling: as fine and soft as cotton gets while still holding up as everyday underwear.
None publish 140s specifically, but the same principle — sourcing longer, finer cotton fibre to spin higher counts — is what heritage underwear names build their reputation on. Sunspel (trading since 1860) and Zimmerli (since 1871) both centre ranges on Sea Island cotton, one of the longest-staple, most expensive cottons grown; Derek Rose does the same with Pima. SALIGIA's Greek Olive range sits in that company.
It resists pilling better than coarser cotton, not worse — finer, longer-staple yarn has fewer loose fibre ends to ball up on the surface. Longevity comes down to care: cold wash, hang dry, no fabric softener, no hot iron.
