SALIGIA Greek Acanthus lyocell underwear for men
BANG&STRIKE — Fabric Guide

Lyocell Underwear,
Explained.

Softer than cotton, up to 50% more absorbent and naturally resistant to odour. Here is what lyocell actually is, why it has become the premium choice for men's underwear, and how SALIGIA's Greek Acanthus range puts it against the skin.
The Short Answer

What Is Lyocell?

Lyocell is a soft, breathable fabric made from the cellulose in sustainably grown wood pulp — most often eucalyptus. It is technically a regenerated cellulose fibre, which means it starts as a natural raw material (wood) and is spun into a smooth, silky yarn using a closed-loop process that recycles around 99.5% of its solvent. The result is a fibre that feels like a blend of the softest cotton and silk, with the breathability of a natural fibre and performance that synthetics struggle to match.

You may also see it sold as TENCEL™, which is the best-known branded version of lyocell. SALIGIA uses a lyocell blended with a touch of elastane for stretch and recovery across its Greek Acanthus collection.

The Data

Lyocell vs Cotton: The Numbers

Cotton is the default for most underwear — and it is fine. But on the measures that actually matter against the skin, lyocell outperforms it across the board.

50%
More absorbent than cotton
1.5–2x
Faster moisture-wicking
~80%
Less water to produce vs cotton
Property Lyocell Cotton
Moisture absorption Up to 50% more absorbent; pulls sweat away from skin Absorbent but holds moisture, can feel damp
Moisture-wicking speed Wicks 1.5–2x faster; disperses and dries quickly Slower to dry; can stay clammy after sweat
Breathability High — micro-structured fibre moves air and vapour Moderate
Odour resistance Naturally inhospitable to odour-causing bacteria Can retain odour once damp
Softness / feel Silky, fluid, luxurious against skin Soft, drier handle
Water to produce 1kg Under ~1,000 litres Around ~5,000 litres
Origin Renewable wood pulp, closed-loop (≈99.5% solvent recycled) Crop-grown, water and land intensive
Biodegradable Yes Yes

Why It Matters

Why Lyocell Is Ideal for Underwear

It keeps you dry

Underwear lives in the warmest, most moisture-prone part of the body. Lyocell's micro-porous structure draws sweat off the skin and spreads it across the fabric so it evaporates faster — so you stay drier through a commute, a workout or a long day.

It resists odour naturally

Odour is created by bacteria feeding on trapped sweat. Because lyocell moves moisture away and dries quickly, it gives those bacteria far less to work with — meaning fresher underwear without chemical treatments, and fewer "is this still okay?" moments.

It is gentle on sensitive skin

The fibre surface is exceptionally smooth, which reduces friction and chafing. For anyone prone to irritation, lyocell is one of the most skin-friendly fabrics available — soft enough to forget you are wearing it.

It is the more sustainable choice

Made from renewable wood pulp in a closed-loop system that reclaims almost all of its solvent, lyocell uses a fraction of the water of cotton and is fully biodegradable at end of life. Premium feel, lighter footprint.

The Collection

SALIGIA Greek Acanthus

SALIGIA's Greek Acanthus range is built around a lyocell-and-elastane blend — the softness and breathability of lyocell with the stretch and shape-retention of a modern performance brief. Named after the acanthus leaf that crowns ancient Greek columns, it is the everyday brief reimagined: weightless on the skin, quietly luxurious, and offered in a considered palette of Black, Grey, Yellow and Brown across briefs, sport briefs and trunks.

"If you have never worn lyocell against your skin, it is a genuinely different experience — silky, cool and barely there."

Looking After It

How to Care for Lyocell

Lyocell is low-maintenance, but a little care keeps it at its best. Machine wash cool (30°C) on a gentle cycle, ideally in a mesh bag. Use a mild detergent, skip the fabric softener (it coats the fibre and reduces wicking), and avoid bleach. Line dry or tumble on low. Because the fibre is naturally smooth, it rarely needs ironing.

People Also Ask

Lyocell Underwear FAQs

Is lyocell better than cotton for underwear?

For underwear, yes on most measures. Lyocell is up to 50% more absorbent, wicks moisture 1.5–2x faster, dries quicker, resists odour better and feels silkier against the skin. Cotton remains a solid, affordable option, but lyocell is the higher-performing, more comfortable choice — especially in heat or during activity.

Is lyocell the same as TENCEL™?

TENCEL™ is a branded, certified form of lyocell made by Lenzing. All TENCEL™ Lyocell is lyocell, but not all lyocell carries the TENCEL™ name. Both describe the same type of wood-pulp cellulose fibre.

Does lyocell underwear shrink?

Quality lyocell is dimensionally stable and resists shrinking when washed correctly. Wash cool on a gentle cycle and line dry or tumble on low to keep the fit. SALIGIA's Acanthus blend includes elastane for added recovery and shape retention.

Is lyocell good for sensitive skin?

Very. The fibre has an exceptionally smooth surface that minimises friction and irritation, and its moisture management keeps skin drier, which helps reduce chafing and rashes. It is one of the most skin-friendly fabrics for underwear.

Is lyocell sustainable?

Yes. It is made from renewable, sustainably sourced wood pulp using a closed-loop process that recycles around 99.5% of its solvent, uses far less water than cotton, and is fully biodegradable.
